Now parents can notice their children’s behavior that seems “bad”. For example, decreased concentration, irritability, and insecurity. The first thing that comes to mind is to fix it. However, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, with reference to the recognized family and child psychologist Svitlana Roiz, advises not to hurry with educational measures, but to be patient and understand the temporary protective mechanisms of the children’s psyche. Only with this approach can the child be helped to relieve anxiety and engage in a full-fledged learning process.
“Everything is gradually remembered” — concentration, memory, and involvement in learning will gradually return to the level they were at before the stressful period. This process should happen naturally, without pressure from parents. On the contrary, it is necessary to relieve the child’s anxiety about his academic failures, explaining that his condition is caused by a normal reaction to stressful events. A child’s awareness of the reasons for his behavior will reduce the impact of these reasons. The child will be able to analyze that he is in a safe environment, and he should no longer spend his concentration on protection.
Children can swing on a chair. If the child often makes some monotonous movements or does not let go of certain objects for a long time, this indicates attempts to “block” unnecessary signals from the environment. It is worth distinguishing when a child wants to isolate himself from secondary factors in order to better concentrate on learning, and not prevent this with his remarks.
One remark — and at least three positive compliments. Nowadays, children expect failures more regularly than successes. This expectation is distorted by stressful experiences. Parents should not feed him, it is important to help the child gradually gain experience of victories.
One of the most significant steps is to help the child adapt to unfamiliar circumstances, which quickly cause fatigue and irritability. Think over a stable study-rest regime, and organize your workplace at home. Try to organize communication with new or former classmates, and help the child feel trust in the teacher. Be sure to acquaint the child with the rules of the new school, in particular regarding food, personal hygiene, and safety, prepare comfortable clothes, and let the children feel the joy of choosing new things, and stationery. From time to time, make small surprises that will allow the child to leave your care with him, even in a new environment.
